Thursday, February 20th a meeting was held at Karl's home to discuss land use and development in that area.
Present were about a dozen mountain bike enthusiast including Pat C and Jimmy M from MBA, Steve Messer from CORBA and many others--we were well represented. Three Sheriff Department reps were there as well. The only developer there was a group planning to develop the land around Karl's house. The meeting was positive and productive.
The Tapia Ranch development is planned to run in a linear fashion up from the Tapia/Wayside junction (just above the corrals) up to Karl's property for phase I and the subsequent two phases will run up from Karl's property to just above the fence and oak tree at the bottom of creek bed. In total, they own 1167 acres from just above the corrals to the old SX track. They hope to break ground in late 2016 or early 2017 and develop for several years. They are platted for around 450 lots with 135 or so in the first phase. Of the 1167 acres they own, they are planning to leave more than 900 as open space and want to work with us to preserve as many existing trails as possible (most of them). Steve Messer offered to help and connect them with MRCA to manage the open space. They intend to improve the road from the Sports Complex all the way back and add a very nice trail head back past the Corrals.
Overall, it went as well as could be hoped with this group, assuming they live up to their word. They want to work with us and want to preserve all the fire roads and single track possible. Tapia fire road will remain as it's now on the LA County list of master trails--good news for us and for access. From what I see, we may even see Karl's Trail and Creek bed go relatively unscathed, though BBQ lid and Logan's are at risk. The 'other shoe' will be Tesoro since it's more invasive and covers more of the trail area we are concerned with. There was no news on Tesoro at this meeting. Steve, Dean and the SCV Trail Users will continue to work with all the land owners and help educate them on the area. Post any questions and I'll try to answer.
